Following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, regulations were issued for the GIFT City (October 2022) and by the UGC (November 2023) , permitting foreign universities ranked in the top 500 globally to establish their campuses in India. These regulations allow foreign universities to set up campuses, design their own curricula, set their own fees, award their own degrees, and attract international students.
With this regulatory framework, India’s first international university campus admitted students in July 2024. Two years on, 13 universities are competing to attract students, and another seven have officially announced plans for 2027–28 – taking the total to at least 20 by July 2027.
